Campaigns for Local Council I (LC I) chairperson positions officially commenced across the country on Tuesday, with candidates in Busujju Constituency, Mityana District, launching their bids on pledges to improve service delivery and address long-standing community challenges.
The candidates say they are ready to provide transparent, accountable and people-centred leadership if elected. Their priorities include improving local roads, supporting agriculture, resolving community disputes fairly and promoting better public health services.
Among those seeking office is Vincent Zziwa, who is contesting for the LC I chairperson seat of Buluma Village in Butayunja Sub-county.
Launching his campaign, Zziwa pledged to mobilise residents to drive socio-economic development through agriculture, community participation and improved local infrastructure.
“My priority is to unite residents and work with them to improve agriculture, maintain our roads, clear drainage channels and promote better health services. Development begins with strong leadership at the village level,” Zziwa said.
Across Busujju Constituency, candidates began canvassing for support after being cleared by Electoral Commission officials to campaign in accordance with the electoral guidelines.
Residents, however, urged aspiring village leaders to remain impartial once elected and avoid abusing their authority, particularly when handling domestic disputes and land-related conflicts.
“We want leaders who will serve everyone equally, listen to the people and resolve disputes fairly instead of taking sides or seeking personal gain,” one resident said.
The Mityana District Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Charles Rebero, called on all candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns and strictly comply with the electoral laws governing the exercise.
“All candidates should campaign peacefully, respect one another and comply with the electoral guidelines. Any acts that breach the law will not be tolerated,” Rebero cautioned.
He also reminded candidates to adhere to the campaign guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission to ensure a free, fair and peaceful electoral process.
The LC I elections are considered a vital part of Uganda's local governance system, as village chairpersons serve as the first point of contact between communities and government institutions.
Residents said they hope the elections will produce leaders committed to accountability, effective service delivery and improving the welfare of their communities.
